Choosing a New Supplement

If you’ve strolled the aisles of a health food store, you’ll know how tricky it is to choose a supplement. Take a deep breath and read on…

If you’ve ever strolled down the supplement-filled aisles of your local health food store, you’ll know how tricky it can be to choose a new supplement. All those bottles, tablets, and capsules are enough to make your head spin! Take a deep breath, relax, and read on…

Why even take supplements?

Tons of reasons! Specific vitamins and minerals can provide a top-up for those not able to get enough. Some evidence-backed supplements are even used for specific health concerns. Check out our articles “Herbs & Supplements” and “Nature’s Guide to Holistic Health” for some ideas!

Furthermore, those following special diets, or those with allergies, might be prone to nutritional deficiencies, which certain supplements can help correct.

Not to mention that natural remedies and supplements can make great additions to your medicine cabinet. Whether it’s nausea or flu prevention, natural supplements can be great to have on hand—just in case.

But wait!

Rule #1 is to consult your health care practitioner before taking a new supplement. Everyone is unique, and not all supplements are right for all people. For instance, some can interact with certain medications (as well as other supplements and herbs!), and some aren’t recommended for people with a certain health condition.

Also keep in mind that not all supplements are created equal. In our article “Supplements A to Z,” naturopathic doctor Serenity Aberdour explains how to choose the best ones. Some of her best tips: there are no cure-alls; “If something sounds too good to be true, you know that it probably is,” and “Supplements cannot make up for questionable dietary choices.”  It’s also helpful to chat with the knowledgeable staff at your health food store.

Once you’re given the green light by your health care practitioner and have selected your product, make sure you follow supplement dos and don’ts. For example, did you know that both tea and calcium can interfere with iron absorption, but that vitamin C can boost iron absorption?

Finally, give your supplements some TLC by storing—and taking—them properly.

Supplements for everyone

With proper guidance from a health care practitioner, supplements can be taken by most demographics. Depending on your age and gender, you’ll likely have unique needs and requirements. Here are just a few alive articles highlighting supplements for particular groups:

  • women
  • men
  • seniors
  • teens
  • kids
